Over a decade ago, I was part of a ministry team that taught groups, planned events, and wrote curriculum. I wanted to grow as a leader and speaker for the ministry and told my husband I needed a group of people willing to give me their time and attention. I needed an audience who listened, leaders who showed me how to lead, and speakers who helped me grow as a speaker…….all who told me what I did well and what I didn’t.
I didn’t know it then but that group of people exists. In 2007, I joined the Speaking Easy Toastmasters club in Decatur, Alabama, to grow as a communicator and leader and it’s the perfect place for it.
It’s Not a Drinking Club
I’d never heard of Toastmasters until a friend told me about the organization. Speaking Easy is just one of nearly 16,000 Toastmasters International clubs operating in 142 countries. Toastmasters International is a non-profit dedicated to promoting communication and leadership skills.
Twelve years later I’m still part of Speaking Easy Toastmasters because of the people in the club. The club members and volunteer leaders dedicate themselves to the mission of Toastmasters and give their time and energy to help members and guests experience a positive learning environment.
Not only did I grow as a leader and speaker in ministry, I grew as a wife and mom, an employee, neighbor, and friend. I’m a better communicator and leader in all areas of my life. My fellow TM members and leaders encourage me to step into roles that push me out of my comfort zone, give me a pat on the back when I’ve done well, and share constructive suggestions when I need to improve.
It’s the members and volunteers of Toastmasters who make the organization what it is, and this month I say to them, thank you.
Here’s To You
Here’s to you Toastmaster members, mentors, and volunteer leaders. For your commitment to grow as individuals and to help others grow too. For getting through your Ice Breaker and making it to every meeting. Here’s to you for serving in the various roles, sometimes at the drop of a hat, and for sharing your knowledge and teaching us a variety of subjects.
Here’s to you club officers, area governors, and district officers…..for investing in others. For selflessly giving your time and talents to serve the clubs and their members. Here’s to you for showing us how it’s done and inspiring us to follow your lead.
Here’s to you fellow Toastmasters. Thank you for living like it matters.
