Mended: A Book Review

The mother-daughter relationship is one of the most tender relationships on the planet, so we desperately need the Spirit’s leading.

from Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters

Blythe Daniel and Helen McIntosh handle the delicate relationships between mothers and daughters with tender care as they share wisdom on how to deepen and strengthen them in their book, Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters. The wisdom offered comes from the Bible, Helen’s counseling experience, and hers and Blythe’s own stories.

Whether your relationship with her is broken, strained, or one you simply want to make better, you will find the tools you need to pursue a healed and healthy relationship with your mother and/or daughter. Blythe and Helen worked and continue working at their own deep relationships and we learn from it in this book.

They’re vulnerable as they share difficult seasons in their relationship and give insight into the steps taken to make it whole and healthy. Conversation starters and script templates are included in the book for those difficult talks we hesitate to begin, and each chapter has a Mending Thread and Making It Personal section.

With grace, the Mending Thread sections ask thought provoking questions and encourage us to see any relational issues in a different way. They use scripture and Bible stories to shed new light on the relationship and cause us to look within our hearts.

The Making It Personal sections help us take what we’ve learned in each chapter and make it our own. Writing a job description, creating visual reminders or special phrases, and planning time together, are just a few of the ideas they suggest.

While the variety of tools and practical suggestions on how to move toward God-honoring relationships with our mothers and daughters are a wonderful part of the book, more importantly, Blythe and Helen make sure to include ample amounts of scripture and prayer suggestions. They remind us over and over throughout the book that our relationship with God through Jesus Christ is what makes us personally whole and restored. It’s God’s love for us that compels us to pursue whole and restored relationships with our mothers and daughters. God will lead us and give us exactly what we need to do this holy work.

We invite you to dream with us about what your relationship can be restored to and how this will impact your family and generations to come.
