We have it in us to change. At whatever stage of life we’re in, we have it in us to grow, learn, and dream. “It’s never too late” is not some pie in the sky quip.
It really is never too late. It’s not too late to:
- say those words
- go for that dream
- quit a bad habit
- start a healthier lifestyle
- change our minds
- come to terms with our stories
- make good on that promise
- reach out to someone
- forgive and apologize
- love again
A thousand other options could be on the list, but the kind of change I’m writing about is the one from the inside out. This isn’t about changing our circumstances, though that may happen. And it’s never about changing others, which is impossible and not our job.
It’s about becoming the kind of person you want to be.
It is NEVER too late to be the kind of person you’ve always wanted to be.
Today
One of my favorite stories in the Bible is found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 23 verses 32-43. Jesus was crucified with two others, both criminals, one on the left and one on the right. According to the Roman Empire it was too late for these men. Too late to change. Too late to live. Too late to be anything but a criminal crucified on a cross.
At some point, perhaps when he was captured or when he was in the cold, dark prison cell awaiting the horror of crucifixion, one of the criminals came to terms with his life, his deeds, and his death sentence. He acknowledged his choices and took responsibility for what he’d done.
Then he asked Jesus to remember him.
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me…”
The criminal on the cross became the kind of person who ends up in paradise.
It is never too late.
